Multiple days with heat index values of more than 104 as September gets underway

A new month will bring a new heat wave. Tuesday begins several days in a row with highs in the upper 90s and heat index values well over 100 degrees. With high pressure overhead, we’ll also only see limited rain chances to help provide any relief.

Tuesday will feature a lot of sunshine with a high around 97 degrees in the Triangle. We’ll bump to 98 on Wednesday and Thursday, with even higher humidity making it feel even worse. 

A little relief arrives just in time for the Labor Day weekend. A cold front from Saturday into Sunday will increase rain chances and drop temperatures back into the lower 90s. Behind the front, sunshine will return along with more comfortable weather. 

Labor Day looks nice with mid-to-upper 80s and only a spotty chance of showers. But the long-range temperature outlook calls for the warmth to last at least through the middle of September as we wait on the first true fall cold front of the season. 

In the tropics, Tropical Storm Edouard will move ashore along the Gulf Coast Tuesday afternoon into the evening. It’ll be short-lived and quickly dissipate by Wednesday. Beyond that, there’s not much else happening in the Atlantic Basin. We’ve yet to see our first hurricane of the season, which typically happens in late July into early August.

TUESDAY will be mostly sunny and hot. The high will be 97 with a heat index of 104. Winds will be light out of the northwest.

OVERNIGHT will be mostly clear. The low will be 74. Winds will be light out of the south. 

WEDNESDAY will be mostly sunny and hot. The high will be 98 with a heat index of 105. Winds will be calm.
