RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Tuesday marked the first day of meteorological fall. But it definitely didn’t feel like it outside.

Another day with a high in the middle-to-upper 90s made it feel more like July than September, marking the 35th time since records began that the first day of September started so hot.
We’ve passed 100 degrees on this date just one time, and have been in the cooler 70s 16 percent of the time – with a high as cool as just 70 degrees in 2006 and 1972.
Meteorological fall itself is the period between September 1 and the final day of November. Each season is broken up into three month chunks around when temperatures typically begin to change.
Our average high temperatures will be changing drastically over the next few months, down from 86 degrees to just 58 degrees by the first day of December.

Astronomical fall arrives in the Northern Hemisphere on the evening of Sept. 22, when the sun is directly over the equator, giving roughly 12 hours of day and night across the globe.
Typically, it’s late this month into early October when we see our first “real” fall cold front of the season.
With temperatures as hot as today continuing throughout the week, we’re all counting down the days to official autumn, which is now just three weeks away.
