Record heat will likely continue for a third straight day Friday, with temperatures once again soaring into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees.

The combination of extreme temperatures and humidity will push heat index values as high as 106°, prompting Heat Advisories through 8 p.m. Friday. If you’ll be outside for an extended period, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and find ways to stay cool during the afternoon. The heat will be the biggest concern through Friday.
There is also a Slight Risk of severe weather for parts of Central North Carolina Friday and Saturday, but storm coverage will vary considerably.
Friday looks especially spotty, with the best chance for showers and thunderstorms north of the Triangle and primarily later in the afternoon and evening. Storm coverage should increase Saturday, with a slightly better chance south of the Triangle. The greatest coverage will come during the afternoon and evening. Any storms that develop could produce very heavy rainfall, frequent and intense lightning, and strong, potentially damaging wind gusts.
The pattern finally breaks Sunday as temperatures drop into the mid-80s, much closer to normal for early September. The cooler weather should hold into at least the middle of next week before temperatures begin climbing again.

However, this is not a true fall pattern just yet. Summer heat will make another appearance, and a sustained transition to cooler, fall-like weather is not showing up in the foreseeable future.

FRIDAY will be mostly sunny and hot with a late-day storm. A strong storm is possible mainly north of the Triangle. The high will be 100 with a heat index of 106. Winds will be out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour.
OVERNIGHT any storms fade, and skies become mostly clear. The low will be 76. Winds will be out of the south at 5 miles per hour.
SATURDAY will be mostly sunny and hot again. Late-day scattered showers and storms, with a few on the stronger side. The high will be 95 with a heat index of 101. Winds will be out of the west at 5 miles per hour.
