CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — The University of North Carolina announced Thursday that Michael Lombardi, general manager of the school’s football program, has resigned.
In a statement sent out Thursday afternoon, the school said, “Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program. The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns.”
Lombardi’s resignation comes after a little more than a month of turmoil, which, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, stemmed from a human resources complaint from a former UNC football front office employee.

After the investigation began, Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave for the duration in July. In early August, the university hired outside legal counsel to help with the investigation, with the school’s Office of University Counsel taking lead.
Lombardi joined North Carolina in December 2024 shortly after coach Bill Belichick was hired.
