Extreme heat is expected again on Saturday in central North Carolina, with a risk of severe weather too. Saturday is a CBS 17 Alert Day because of the risk of severe weather later in the day and Saturday night.

We hit 99° at RDU Airport Friday in the Triangle, just shy of the record high of 100°, but still well above the average high of 86° this time of year.
Saturday will not be a washout, with plenty of dry time early in the day. The severe weather risk will come later in the day as a cold front slowly approaches. A level 2, slight risk of severe weather is in place for Saturday, with damaging winds and large hail being the main threats, which is why Saturday is an Alert Day. Saturday will also still be hot, with highs in the upper-90s.
Eventually, the cold front will clear central North Carolina early Sunday, bringing a brief end to the rain and extreme heat. There is a small chance of rain early Sunday, but it will dry out later in the day, with highs only in the 80s.
Highs will settle back into the mid-to-upper 80s as Labor Day arrives on Monday. Then we’ll slowly creep back into the low- to mid-90s with mostly dry weather later in that week as another strong ridge of high pressure takes over.

SATURDAY will be mostly sunny and hot again. Late-day scattered showers and storms could be severe. The high will be 97 with a heat index of 105.
OVERNIGHT storms fade with mostly cloudy skies. The low will be 73.
SUNDAY will start with some rain, then see clearing later in the day with cooler temperatures. The high will be 84.
