‘We heard shooting’: New details emerge after enraged Raleigh car repair customer accused of opening fire

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Henderson man is facing several felony charges after Raleigh police said a gun was aimed at a person and gunshots were fired in a south Raleigh car repair shop Saturday afternoon.

The incident was reported just after 12:30 p.m. Saturday, just south of downtown Raleigh at MB Auto Service, 2601 Renfrow Road at the corner of Pecan Road, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

Officers said no one was injured in the dispute that started when a car repair customer disagreed over the bill, arguing that transmission repairs were too expensive.

The man refused to pay the repair cost and soon pulled out two guns — a 9mm Beretta handgun and a 380 Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun, according to an arrest warrant completed by Raleigh police.

“We heard shooting sounds,” auto shop worker Omar Mustafa told CBS 17.

Mustafa said the sound was from a gun fired beside his brother’s ear, who was working in the office and initially dealt with the customer. Mustafa and other workers were in the repair bay at the time but soon spotted the gunman, he said.

“We looked around and saw the guy holding two guns and asking for the key to the car,” Mustafa said.

The gunman is facing four kidnapping charges after he moved four people in the repair shop from one area to another, the warrant said.

The arrest warrant also said the suspect fired both handguns during the incident.

Police said in the arrest warrant that wild scene included:

• Pointing the handgun at four people
• Firing a handgun in the direction of one person
• Firing at the ground near four people
• Firing the handguns around in a threatening manner

The man fled the shop in a car and was soon pulled over by police nearby in the 2600 block of South Saunders Street, officers said.

During his arrest, police said they recovered the two guns — and the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Elvin Junior Fields, 54, who is also listed with a Mebane address, is facing the following charges, police said:

• Felony second degree kidnapping (four counts)
• Felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
• Felony discharge a weapon into an occupied property
• Assault by pointing a gun (four counts)
• Go armed to terror of the people
• Carrying a concealed gun
• Discharging firearm in the city

Fields was held without bond in the Wake County Jail.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Wake County District Court.
