DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — After he was found abandoned inside a Durham dumpster, a dog named Kingston was adopted and left a shelter for his new home this weekend.

Kingston was discovered on Tuesday when workers heard a noise coming from a dumpster behind The Scrap Exchange thrift store along Shoppers Street near Chapel Hill Road in Durham.
When the workers opened the dumpster’s lid, they found a dog with a cord wrapped around its neck.
The identity of a man in a video with the dog later found in the dumpster is still wanted as a person of interest, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said.
The pup was rescued from the dumpster and taken to the Animal Protection Society of Durham, where he was named Kingston.

Surveillance video from nearby just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday shows a man in an orange shirt and dark pants yelling at the dog.
Then, the video shows the man dragging Kingston across the store’s parking lot before the camera’s audio captured a loud bang.

“He was really nervous was the first thing we noticed,” said Dr. Samantha Zurlinden, the Animal Protection Society director of animal well-being.
By the end of the week, Kingston made quick progress, playing in the yard with volunteers and running around, Animal Protection Society officials said.
Officials said there was an outpouring of interest in adopting Kingston.
“This is obviously a heartbreaking story,” said Stacey Bluth, interim director of Animal Protection Society. “It is so exciting to see the community come together, the outpouring of support.”

On Saturday, a family adopted Kingston and he was allowed to go home.
“We were especially happy to find an adopter with experience caring for dogs who have experienced trauma as well as dogs with skin conditions,” Bluth said.
