The dry weather and lower humidity have given central North Carolina a taste of fall, but that brief break from the heat and humidity is coming to an end.

Changes begin Thursday as winds turn out of the south, bringing in warmer temperatures and higher humidity. Highs will climb to around 90 degrees across central North Carolina Thursday afternoon. A cold front will approach the area Friday, bringing an increasing chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Rain chances will remain in the forecast through the weekend as the front stalls nearby instead of quickly clearing the area. Showers and thunderstorms will be scattered, so the weekend will not be a washout, but rain will be possible at times. The highest rain chances currently look to be Friday and Saturday.
Another boundary will move into the region during the middle of next week, opening the door for cooler air to filter into central North Carolina. Our 10-day forecast shows temperatures falling into the 70s at times, with the coolest air of the period arriving toward the end of next week. That could provide our first more noticeable taste of fall after a warm start to September.
The tropics remain active, but the developing strong El Niño continues to be a major limiting factor across the Atlantic Basin. A well-defined low in the central Atlantic has a low chance of developing over the next seven days. Even if it does become a tropical depression or storm, current conditions and steering patterns would favor it remaining well away from the U.S. mainland.
The Atlantic can change quickly, especially as we move through the heart of hurricane season, so conditions will continue to be monitored closely. Check back for the latest updates as we track both the tropics and the changing weather pattern across central North Carolina.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers or storms in the afternoon. The high will be 93. The wind will be out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour
