RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers said they believe a North Carolina dad fell asleep while driving his family along Interstate 85 early Saturday morning, smashing into a stopped fire truck in Granville County.

The crash, which killed two Charlotte parents, one of their children, and injured a fourth child, was reported around 4 a.m. Saturday, on northbound I-85 near mile marker 197 at the Smith Road overpass, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
A previous wreck in the same area was about to clear the highway — but a Providence Volunteer Fire Department truck was parked in the left lane, about four miles north of the Durham County line, Sgt. AA Chehaitli of the highway patrol told CBS 17.
The fire truck, which had all emergency lights activated, was parked to keep traffic away from troopers dealing with the earlier wreck, Chehaitli said.
The Charlotte family of four was traveling in a Toyota Highlander, heading north in the same lane when the crash happened. The SUV smashed into the back of the fire truck, Chehaitli said.

No one was in the fire truck and no one else was injured.
Jason Nye, 36, and his wife Christina Nye, 37, along with one of their two children in the SUV died, troopers said. The couple’s other child was injured.
Chehaitli said the Charlotte family was driving up to New York for a trip and to visit family. He said troopers believe the driver fell asleep just before the crash.
Northbound I-85 was closed between the Creedmoor exit and Oxford until just after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Troopers said that other than the autopsy, the investigation is complete.
