Residents ask for crosswalk at popular downtown Raleigh district

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — One of downtown Raleigh’s busiest pedestrian connections doesn’t have a crosswalk. Now, residents who live near Smoky Hollow say the situation is putting both drivers and pedestrians at risk.

All day and all night long, people cross Tucker Street and North West Street. As the evening hours and weekend near, foot traffic only increases.

“It’s the only throughway between Smoky Hollow to Glenwood,” Shane Stanley, a Glenwood South resident, told city council members at a recent council meeting. “It’s very heavily trafficked by pedestrians who are constantly jaywalking across it.”

Stanley is among the Glenwood South residents pointing to the potential danger at the crossing.

Tucker Street is the main way people move between Smoky Hollow and Glenwood South, but there’s no crosswalk for another half block north or south. Only traffic on Tucker Street have a stop sign.

“I believe this constitutes a dangerous situation both for pedestrians and especially late at night when there’s lots of pedestrian traffic and tons of Ubers moving through that area,” Stanley said.

CBS 17 reached out to the City of Raleigh to ask if staff would look into this issue after hearing concerns from residents.

A city spokesperson said, “At this time, our transportation department has not gotten any citizen feedback/complaint about this intersection and don’t have any planned improvements for this intersection. They said they will look into it further to determine if there are any crash patterns that need to be addressed.”

The city notes residents can send any concerns about traffic conditions to through the AskRaleigh platform.

In the meantime, the city’s Vision Zero team is spending millions on improving road conditions for drivers and pedestrians every year. Residents are hopeful future investments can be made near Smoky Hollow.
