CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WNCN) — Parts of the North Carolina coast are preparing for some rough weather this week.

According to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, “potentially hazardous conditions” are expected starting Tuesday through Friday as “a strengthening offshore low-pressure system is expected to impact the Outer Banks.”
High winds, flooding and dangerous surf conditions are among the impacts expected. The National Weather Service is forecasting moderate to strong north to northeast winds, with the peak being Thursday into Thursday night.
Flooding is also a concern, with a coastal flood watch in effect. Dangerous surf and large waves are expected, which could cause beach erosion and overwash. Ocean overwash is especially a concern during high tide times and on east-facing beaches, officials said.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore said travelers can also expect disruptions on NC Highway 12, particularly south of Marc Basnight Bridge. Drivers should be prepared for possible lane closures, sand and saltwater on roadways and other travel impacts. Some routes may also become inaccessible depending on the severity of the hazards, officials said, and vehicles could be at risk of becoming stranded.
People are also encouraged to stay out of the ocean along east-facing beaches during the storm. The beach in northern Rodanthe should be avoided altogether, officials said, “due to the presence of threatened oceanfront structures.” In the last few years, multiple homes have fallen in both Rodanthe and Buxton due to weather impacts.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay up to date with local weather and road conditions.
