Brand new nearly $1 million Clayton fire engine overturns in crash

CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A brand new fire engine that cost $950,000 was damaged during a crash in Clayton Thursday morning, town officials said.

The single-vehicle wreck was reported around 6 a.m. along Covered Bridge Road, closing the road between Payton Drive and Club Connector, according to a Clayton town news release.

The vehicle, Engine 1, flipped on its side during the incident and stopped just off the roadside in northeast Clayton. Town officials said no one was injured in the crash.

The Clayton Fire Department announced Monday that Engine 1 was put into service that day at the town’s Horne Street Fire Station.

The engine is a 2026 Pierce Enforcer with a 1500 gallon per minute pump and a 750-gallon tank, according to a social media post, which included four photos of the new vehicle.

Clayton officials Thursday morning confirmed the new fire engine involved in the crash cost $950,000.

“We’re just glad nobody was hurt,” said Nathanael Shelton, communications director for Clayton.

The vehicle involved in the crash was the second of two new fire engines for Clayton. A 2026 Pierce Enforcer with the same specs went into service earlier this month as Engine 2 at the Clayton Fire Department N.C. 42 East station.

There’s no word about the cause of Thursday’s crash. Officials said the Clayton Police Department is investigating.
