No drought improvement across central North Carolina after dry week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Without significant rain over the past week, the drought saw no improvement across central North Carolina. While there was slight improvement in the drought in the mountains and in the Piedmont, mainly east of the mountains, the drought otherwise saw no improvement, and even a slight worsening for some across the state.

It was another drier than normal month across central North Carolina, with many areas picking up much lower rainfall amounts than normal. Fortunately, rain is expected this weekend, which could add much needed rain to the ground all across the area. The Climate Prediction Center is calling for near-normal, or a slightly higher likelihood of wetter than average conditions for the month of October. A normal October would pick up 3.37″ of rain throughout the entire month. It won’t totally erase the drought for everyone, but it will certainly help.

The Climate Prediction Center is also forecasting that there will be parts of our state that could see the removal of drought, which could mean no drought at all, or just a lingering D0 level (which is “abnormally dry” but not considered a drought level). These are steps in the right direction. Fall can be an active time of year, so we will hope for an active pattern to keep bringing chances for rain.
