Central NC could have seen its last 90s of 2026

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — It’s been a very hot year at times, climbing as high as 103 degrees on two occasions. But there’s a decent chance we could have just seen our last intense heat for the remainder of the year.

We surpassed 90 degrees as recently as last Friday, climbing to 91 at RDU.

That marked the first October 90s in seven years, since reaching 100 degrees on October 3, 2019.

We’ve now recorded 79 afternoons with a high of 90 degrees or above this year in the Triangle, with 92 such days in the Sandhills.

Those are both 20 to almost 30 more days than we hit 90 degrees last year. But neither is near the all-time record for the number of 90-degree days, with 91 in 2010 for Raleigh and 130 in 1941 for Fayetteville.

If you’re tired of the heat, there are growing odds we’re done with 90s until next year.

Since records began in 1887, the latest Raleigh has hit 90 degrees or hotter is October 10, with the earliest in a year being March 12.

That leaves exactly five straight months in between where 90 hasn’t been reached — or 152 days of the year.

For Fayetteville, that number is a little smaller, with them having hit 90 or above as late as November 27 and as early as March 11 — happening earlier this year.

Even so, there are currently no signs of summer-like weather anywhere on the 10-day. And we have history on our side for not seeing 90 degrees or hotter across central North Carolina for the next several months.
