North Carolina attorney general launches website to report gas stations not passing along tax savings

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson launched a website Tuesday to help ensure drivers are getting relief at the gas pump.

Entitled N.C. Fuel Check, the website allows drivers to report gas stations that they suspect are not passing along tax savings granted by the Relief at the Pump Act.

The act, which took effect on Oct. 10, suspends the state’s tax of 41 cents per gallon through November.

At a press conference on late Tuesday morning, Jackson announced the launch of N.C. Fuel Check to report gas stations pocketing the tax savings. He also said he sent letters to gas retailers and distributors informing them that they are required to pass those savings on to customers.

According to Jackson, the North Carolina Department of Justice will also review publicly available gas prices to look for outliers, such as stations with prices that are much higher than comparable businesses nearby.

“No matter how much money you think you might be able to keep for yourself, if you choose to break this law and create windfall profits, it is going to cost you more when our office knocks on your door,” Jackson said at the press conference. “Your interest is in making sure that every penny of this gas savings that you are now receiving is passed along to families in North Carolina.”

In a statement following the conference, Jackson said, “If gas stations see their costs drop by 41 cents per gallon but don’t pass that along to drivers, that’s a massive windfall for these companies instead of relief for families. My job is to make sure the savings reach the families.”

According to the attorney general’s office, gas stations pay the tax when they receive a new delivery and many are still selling fuel they bought with the tax. Prices will not decrease until gas stations receive new deliveries, which is expected to happen within about a week.
