Durham PEER Center hosts grand opening and free car giveaway

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A local mother has a brand new set of wheels to help her navigate some tough circumstances.

Lidia Diaz received the keys to a new car on Thursday at the grand opening of Durham’s new Pinnacle PEER Center. The “PEER” stands for Pinnacle Economic Empowerment Resource.

Diaz recently lost her job and is experiencing homelessness. She told CBS 17 having a car is a game-changer for her and her loved ones.

“To have this last piece of the puzzle, meaning having this vehicle to help us get from anywhere we need to go, whether it’s a grocery store, school, work, doctor’s appointment. This is a really a big turning point for me,” Diaz said.

The PEER Center will provide financial education, community support, and business resources for people in Durham.
