Work on the new music venue has continued over the past year. When it opens, concert goers can expect a larger stage, more amenities, and the potential for hundreds of more seats.

“It’s great,” Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell. “I live in downtown, a few blocks away, so I get to see it all and it’s really exciting. You can just see from this infrastructure right here how much bigger it is than the existing one.”

“One of the fortunate side effects of a drought is the rain has not gotten in the way,” she said.

A ceremonial topping off ceremony marked a milestone in the ongoing construction of the new Red Hat Amphitheater Tuesday afternoon, which is set to be open in time for the 2027 concert season.

In 2024, the City Council voted to relocate the popular music venue a block south, allowing it to stay downtown, while also making way for future expansion of the Raleigh Convention Center.

“This is spurring other investment and totally transforming the southern end of downtown,” Cowell said.

“We’re incredibly excited,” said Downtown Raleigh Alliance President and CEO Bill King, who says businesses around the amphitheater can see double their typical crowds on show nights,

“Because the venue is embedded in downtown, a lot of people really do go out to eat and drink before or after, which is very different than the other venues in the region,” King said. “Most of the other venues in the region are a little bit more further out.”

The existing Red Hat Amphitheater will be demolished at the end of this concert season to make way for a ballroom at the Convention Center.
