CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte leaders are beginning the process of finding an interim mayor ahead of Mayor Lyles’ resignation.

Lyles, who is set to resign at the end of June, announced plans to step down this month, saying she wanted to spend more time with family.
At Tuesday night’s business meeting, council members approved a plan to open the application process on June 2, closing it seven days later.

Council would hold a public forum on the candidates on June 18 before voting to appoint someone on June 22. The interim mayor would be sworn in on July 1st.
Several current and former city leaders expressed interest in assuming the role, including former Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and current Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell.
