FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Two children were killed and another was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash late Wednesday night in Fayetteville, police said.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers responded around 10:50 p.m. to a crash on Cedar Creek Road near Fields Road.
Police said two children died in the crash, while a third child was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The children’s mother, who was driving the vehicle, was not seriously injured and is expected to recover, according to police.

All three children were under the age of 15, investigators said. The identities of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

“This is an active investigation,” the Fayetteville Police Department said in a Thursday news release. “Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
Cedar Creek Road remains closed near Fields Road, and drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
