The deadly multi-vehicle crash happened around 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, on the outer loop of I-485 near the Dixie River Road overpass.

What happened

According to the NTSB, a Honda CRV driven by 16-year-old Logan Sauer was traveling south in the middle lane at about 78 mph in a 70 mph zone. A Chrysler Town & Country minivan was traveling beside it in the right lane at about 66 mph.

Investigators said the SUV abruptly turned right into the minivan. After the initial impact, both vehicles spun right, left the road, and traveled onto the right shoulder, where they struck the rear of a parked tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt in the crash.

The 16-year-old SUV driver and five of the six people in the minivan were killed.

A 16-year-old girl in the minivan survived. Emergency responders reported she crawled out through the back of the vehicle after the crash. Damage to the minivan was so severe that first responders initially had difficulty locating all family members.

SUV driver: THC detected

The NTSB report states the 16-year-old SUV driver held a North Carolina ‘Class C Level 2 limited provisional license’ issued on July 8, 2025, just weeks before the fatal crash.

According to the report, the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found no alcohol in his system. However, toxicology testing detected delta-9-THC in his blood.

The NTSB report states that delta-9-THC can impair motor coordination, reaction time, decision-making, and perception. It also notes that interpreting THC levels in postmortem blood can be challenging, and that marijuana remains illegal in North Carolina. Other cannabis-related compounds, including CBG and THCV, were also detected in urine and/or blood.

Investigation continues

The six people who died at the scene included the teenage SUV driver, Logan Sauer, and five people inside the minivan, including three young children.
