RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) β An air quality alert was issued for more than 20 North Carolina counties on Friday, including several in the Triangle area, the National Weather Service said.

According to the weather service office in Raleigh, high levels of ozone were reported in various North Carolina counties.
In the Greensboro area, a code orange air quality action day was issued until midnight on Friday by the Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department in Winston-Salem.
In the Triangle region, the code orange alert is in effect until 8 p.m.
βAn Air Quality Action Day means that ground level ozone concentrations within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards,β the National Weather Service said in the alert.

The orange alert for central North Carolina includes Person, Granville, Orange, Durham, Franklin, Wake, Johnston, Harnett, Cumberland, and Sampson counties.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality in Raleigh issued the alert for central North Carolina.
Meanwhile, in the Charlotte area, a code orange alert was issued for Rowan, Mecklenburg, and Cabarrus counties until 8 p.m.

Some counties in South Carolina are also under the code orange alert.
