Hot weather builds in across central NC

The heat is on! A strong ridge of high pressure is developing across the south and is taking control of our weather pattern, setting the stage for a prolonged stretch of hot and mostly dry conditions.

Temperatures will climb a little higher each day through the weekend, with highs reaching the mid and upper-90s Saturday and Sunday. A weak cold front arrives Monday, and while it could help a few showers and storms develop, it won’t be a big chance for rain, meaning the drought will likely get a little worse this week.

While temperatures will drop briefly behind the front, the strong ridge of high pressure builds back in, allowing the hot weather to return for the end of next week. In terms of humidity, fortunately, most of Saturday won’t be muggy despite hot weather, but Sunday will be more uncomfortable, not just because of the heat, but due to increasing humidity.

Unfortunately, there are no significant rainmakers on the horizon. While a few scattered showers may develop from time to time, widespread beneficial rainfall remains absent from the forecast. The overall pattern favors continued warmth, growing humidity, and persistent drought concerns across central North Carolina.

Looking ahead through the next 7 to 10 days, temperatures are expected to remain above average, with highs generally in the mid-90s and only low-end chances for afternoon showers. Summer has arrived early, and it appears to be settling in for a while.
