Summer heat setting in central NC this week

Summer-like heat is settling into central North Carolina, with temperatures climbing into the mid and upper 90s this weekend and early next week. While the afternoons have been hot, relatively low humidity has helped keep conditions more comfortable than typical June standards.

Sunday will be hot, with many communities reaching 95 to 98 degrees. A weak backdoor cold front may drift south through the area Sunday evening, but it is expected to weaken quickly and bring little more than an isolated shower.

The dominant weather feature through the middle of next week will be a strong ridge of high pressure across the Southeast. This will keep temperatures well above normal, with highs remaining in the 90s and some locations flirting with daily record values.

Rain chances stay very limited through the first half of the week, although a few isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Better opportunities for rainfall arrive late next week as increasing humidity combines with disturbances moving around the edge of the ridge.

For now, the main story remains the heat. If spending extended time outdoors, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and be prepared for temperatures approaching the upper 90s through much of the upcoming week.
