ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WNCN) — The search for a missing Roanoke Rapids Lake kayaker has come to an end after crews found his body Saturday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Angel Rafael Aparicio Martinez went missing on May 14 after the two-person kayak he and his friend were in capsized in the lake.
Martinez’s friend was able to be rescued by responders from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department. Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department and Halifax EMS, but could not find Martinez.
Martinez’s family told CBS 17 that he gave the kayak’s only lifejacket to his friend before it overturned.

The search for Martinez saw more than 20 state and local agencies band together to try and find him. The agencies included the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, North Carolina Emergency Management and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

In a post made late Saturday night on Facebook, the sheriff’s office said the body of Angel Rafael Martinez was found in the Roanoke Rapids Lake near the Fifth Street boat ramp where he was last seen on May 14.
“The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the agencies and volunteers that have assisted in the search and provided food and water to the responders and the family of Martinez through the many days of this operation,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
