NC trooper honors wife’s breast cancer journey with custom NCSHP patrol cars

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — While a woman battled an aggressive form of cancer, and amongst the usual support pouring from family and friends, her husband chose a special way to express his support.

Ginger Edwards, an Administrative Specialist with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and found herself under the care of Cape Fear Valley Health.

“My first thought was devastation,” Ginger said. “Hearing the words ‘aggressive’ and ‘chemo’ put me in a very sad place. Hearing the ‘C’ word is very scary, but I knew God was going to be with me on every step of this journey.”

Officials with Cape Fear Valley Health said Edwards faced challenges from chemotherapy, like severe fatigue and magnesium and potassium deficiencies that required multiple infusions. Through it all, officials said Ginger is now cancer-free and has been cleared by her physicians.

“My care team has been phenomenal,” she said. “From my surgeons to my oncology team and nurses, they took the best care of me every visit. My journey was hard at times, but God put me in a place at Cape Fear Valley where I received the best care and met wonderful people I will always cherish.”

Person, dog killed in Cumberland Co. train crash: NCSHP

Ginger’s husband of 34 years, Jeff Edwards, used a different vehicle — two vehicles to be exact — to show a form of support for his wife through her journey of battling cancer. Being that they both work for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol — Ginger as an administrator and Jeff as a trooper — her husband customized two NCSHP patrol cars with cancer awareness colors and the universal pink ribbon. The license plate on one car that pulled up to Cape Fear Valley Cancer Treatment & CyberKnife Center on Cancer Survivors Day read “SHP-HOPE.”

“The public will see that cancer affects people from all walks of life, even our families,” Jeff said. “We want people to know of our prayers and support and that we recognize their struggles.”

Ginger will continue immunotherapy treatments through December, when she will ring the bell officially marking the end of her cancer journey.
