Pokémon card exchange turns into armed robbery at Durham park; 2 teens charged: Police

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Two teenagers are facing charges after a Pokémon card exchange at a Durham park turned into an armed robbery last week, police said Monday.

According to the Durham Police Department, the armed robbery happened between people who arranged to meet and purchase Pokémon cards at Elmira Park in the 500 block of Elmira Avenue just before midnight on June 3.

An investigation determined a similar incident happened two days later, on June 5, in Burlington, according to Durham police and court records.

Through a joint investigation between Durham and Burlington police, according to officials, law enforcement identified the suspects as 19-year-old Kaire Dixon and 18-year-old Cheo White.

A warrant filed by Durham police shows Dixon is accused of conspiring with White to steal $250 from one victim and an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max valued at $1,000 from another during the armed robbery at Elmira Park.

In the Burlington armed robbery, according to a warrant filed by police, Dixon allegedly conspired with White to steal $7,179 from a victim.

Court records show Dixon was arrested on June 5, the day of the Burlington robbery.

Dixon is charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon in the Durham incident. He is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping in the Burlington incident, according to court records.

According to court records, Dixon was not given bond for either incident.

Records show Dixon made his first appearance in Durham County court on Monday and is scheduled to return on June 30. His first appearance in Alamance County court is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

As of Monday afternoon, White remains at large. He is wanted on the charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon in Durham, according to police.
