The county says the goal is to bring more attention and more customers to local businesses and the county.

“I’m not from this county. I don’t know where anything is, but I come from a tourist town originally, so I was thinking this would be handy for people that are moving here, people that are from here,” said Kim Garrett, a Davidson County GIS analyst/developer.

From barbecue restaurants and breweries to retail shops and local landmarks, Davidson County hopes the newly launched Explore Davidson County app will become a one-stop guide to exploring everything local.

How Does it Work?

The app can be accessed on your computer and on your phone.

“I tried to make it as easy. There’s how-to guides in it. There’s even a how-to video … of the web app or the mobile version, so I think everyone will like it,” Garrett said.

Garrett spent the last few months developing it.

The app lists nearly 200 businesses and attractions across the county, including 87 restaurants and 61 retail shops.

“Most of them at least looking at the map or concentrated in Lexington, but we did … end up adding a lot more to Thomasville. Denton. We’re waiting on getting some more information from them,” Garrett said.

You can search by category, pull up directions and view contact information. You can even find businesses nearby using your phone’s location.

If a business closes or a new business opens, users can submit corrections directly through the app.

The county believes the app can do more than just help tourists.

“I know there’s a lot of folks that may not know what is available out in the community … Even as myself as a native, I’ve learned a lot through this project,” Davidson County GIS Manager Jason Clodfelter said.

The Explore Davidson County app is free to use. You can now access it through the Davidson County Website.
