Juvenile taken into custody after deadly shooting at Durham apartment complex; victim identified: Police

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A 14-year-old has been taken into custody after a man was shot dead on Monday afternoon in Durham, police said.

CBS 17 previously reported that officers said a fight between a juvenile and a “female” turned into a deadly shooting when an adult male tried to intervene around 2:15 p.m. Monday at the Hoover Road apartment complex. The juvenile fled the scene before the police arrived, officers said.

According to the Durham Police Department, the fatal shooting victim has been identified as 34-year-old Gary Tharrington. He was found by first responders and taken to a nearby hospital for multiple gunshot wounds, but succumbed to his injuries Monday evening at the hospital.

Officers said Tuesday morning that several hours after the shooting, the 14-year-old suspect was found and taken into custody.

“The Durham Police Department would like to thank the community members who came forward with information and assisted investigators,” officers said. “Their willingness to provide timely information was instrumental in helping officers quickly locate the suspect.”
