Felon nabbed, car seized in Smithfield raid that uncovered cocaine, guns: Police

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — A Smithfield drug bust and felon arrest involved a tactical armored truck and a state helicopter on Saturday after neighbors complained of drug dealing and alcohol sales, police said.

An investigation led up to the raid of the home in the 1100 block of Harris Street in Smithfield, according to a Smithfield Police Department news release.

Police obtained a search warrant, which was executed Saturday morning at the home, where there were four shootings over five years, officers said. A deadly shooting was reported at the location in mid-June 2021.

During the search on Saturday, police said Smithfield Narcotics Detectives seized the following:

  • cocaine
  • marijuana
  • U.S. currency
  • vehicles — a 2007 Lexus and a Denali moped listed in an arrest warrant
  • handguns, including a stolen gun

Police released several photos from the raid, including two guns that were seized. A photo also showed a helicopter from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Jimmy Junior Rayford, 58, a convicted felon, was arrested in the case and faces the following charges:

  • Possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine
  • Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana
  • Three counts of maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for the sale or delivery of narcotics
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Possession of a stolen firearm

Rayford was held without bond in the Johnston County Detention Center.

“To the drug dealers, I hope you were watching. Together, we have the resources and coordinated capabilities to find you, investigate you, and put you in jail,” Smithfield Police Chief Pete Hedrick said in the release.

Police said assisting in the raid were the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Special Operations helicopter, the Johnston County Sheriff’s STAR Team and BearCat, SBI agents, and ALE agents.
