Heat and humidity remain the big story across central North Carolina. Sunday looks even hotter, with highs soaring back into the upper 90s. A few locations could challenge record highs once again.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front, providing multiple opportunities for rain. Coverage will remain uneven, meaning some neighborhoods could miss out entirely while others see more than one round of storms.
The Storm Prediction Center places all of central North Carolina under a slight risk for severe weather on Saturday. The primary threats will be damaging wind gusts above 58 mph, frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and small hail.

Heat index values are expected to climb back into the 100 to 107 degree range, making another Heat Advisory possible.
The good news arrives Sunday night into Monday as the cold front pushes through the region. High temperatures will fall back to around 89 degrees on Monday, bringing a much-needed break from the extreme heat. Another chance for showers returns Tuesday before temperatures gradually rebound later next week, just in time for Father’s Day weekend.

FORECAST
SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with afternoon showers and storms. There’s a slight risk for severe storms along a line forming ahead of a cold front. The high will be 98 with a heat index of 106.Winds will be 5 to 10 miles per hour out of the southwest.

OVERNIGHT will be partly cloudy with a shower or storm around early. The low will be 74. Winds will be out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour.
MONDAY will be mostly clear and cooler. The high will be 89. Winds will be 5 to 10 miles per hour out of the northwest.
