Firefighter among 7 injured in massive Durham apartment complex fire

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Seven people were injured — including a firefighter — when a massive Durham fire damaged at least 10 apartment units late Sunday morning, officials said.

The fire was reported just before 11 a.m. at the University Ridge Apartments at 3611 University Drive, according to the Durham Fire Department.

About a dozen apartment units were burned in the fire. During the blaze, at least one person jumped from a third-floor window to escape the fire, Durham officials told CBS 17.

Five people were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries, including a firefighter who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Crews rescued a dog that was trapped in one unit.

There were 75 firefighters at the scene to extinguish the blaze, which took about an hour, according to Durham officials.

The Red Cross has been called to assist with residents whose apartments were destroyed or damaged.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is hampered by severe damage and structural instability,” fire officials said.
