Arrest made in Durham deadly stabbing on American Tobacco Trail last month; despute was over ‘panhandling’ spots: ADA

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Durham have arrested a man in a deadly stabbing along the American Tobacco Trail after a dispute over “panhandling” spots escalated late last month, officials say.

The incident was discovered just after 6:30 p.m. on April 27 when a man was found with critical injuries in the 3000 block of Fayetteville Street, according to a Durham Police Department news release.

Howard Reade Jr., 44, who suffered from stab wounds, was taken to a local hospital where he later died, police said.

Christopher Cornelius Caldwell, 64, was arrested Thursday in the case and faces a first-degree murder charge, according to an arrest warrant.

The arrest warrant, which was issued on May 8, did not reveal any details about the incident.

In court Thursday, assistant district attorney Kathryn Burgdorf said that a fight escalated over panhandling spots, leading to the stabbing.

Caldwell is being held without bond in the Durham County Jail. He appeared on a video feed in Durham County District Court on Thursday when he was appointed a public defender.

The incident happened almost two months after another man was stabbed to death along the trail.
