DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Duane Gibson Jr. made his first appearance in Durham County court on Monday, one day after allegedly shooting his own father.

The 28-year-old suspect is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and assault with a deadly weapon.
“He was on the floor when police arrived with a gunshot wound to the chest,” Durham County Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Burgdorf said. “They were able to apply pressure to help control the bleeding until EMS arrived on scene.”
Family members of the suspect told the judge they fear for their safety if Gibson is released.
They asked CBS 17 to keep their identities anonymous. One family member said Gibson is suffering from mental health issues with a history of erratic behavior. The family member also said Gibson owns multiple weapons and lives within walking distance.

Durham police said the shooting was reported Sunday morning on Brighton Road in the Hope Valley neighborhood.

According to the Durham County District Attorney’s Office, Gibson is also accused of hitting his brother with a baseball bat.
“He entered the bedroom and started hitting him approximately five or six times with a baseball bat while yelling,” Burgdorf said. “He was sleeping and did not understand what he was being yelled at about.”
Gibson has no prior convictions and a Durham County judge ordered no bond in this case. He’ll be back in court next month, represented by a public defender.
