CBS 17’s 3-Degree Guarantee reaches first ‘perfect month’ milestone with nearly $370,000 donated to charities since 2014

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The CBS 17 Weather Team just finished up its first perfect month of forecasting for the 3-Degree Guarantee, raising $3,000 for the charity Able To Serve.

Since 2014, CBS 17 has picked a different local charity each month to highlight and raise money and awareness for throughout the month.

The amount of money raised depends on how often the forecast is correct within three degrees. When the forecast is right, $100 goes into the bank for the month, and at the end of the month, the funds are handed over to the charity in the form of a giant check.

CBS 17 Chief Meteorologist Wes Hohenstein said, “North Carolina weather is wild, and every month there is something different that can pop up to ruin a forecast—and we have encountered every single one of these things over the years, so getting all the forecasts correct in a month is hard.”

The CBS 17 weather team verifies the forecast every day on air, right or wrong. There have been many times over the years when the team has come close, which is how they have been able to raise nearly $370,000 since the program started in 2014. That money has gone to nearly 150 different local charities over the years that viewers nominate for selection.

“The forecast accuracy is important to us and our viewers, but it means more to us that our forecasts contribute to meaningful change and impact in our community,” Hohenstein said.

CBS 17 partners with Michael and Son Home Services for the Three Degree Guarantee program. They match the funds every month, which is how Able To Serve received $3000 for the month of June 2026.
