Fuquay-Varina police officer fires at suspect who pointed gun near Action Park

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WNCN) — A Fuquay-Varina police officer fired at least one gunshot at a suspect after town officials said the male “pointed a firearm at the officer” late Friday night.

Officers were unable to find the person after the incident that was reported around 11:20 p.m. in Action Park at 609 Wake Chapel Road, according to a town of Fuquay-Varina news release.

While on a routine patrol, the release said, a Fuquay-Varina police officer spotted a person walking along railroad tracks behind the park, which is near Fayetteville Street.

The officer tried to “make contact” with the person, but during the encounter, the suspect “reportedly pointed a firearm at the officer,” Susan Weis, Fuquay-Varina communications director, said in the news release.

“The officer discharged their weapon at the suspect, and the suspect fled the scene on foot,” the news release said. Officials did not say how many shots were fired.

The news release said that the person involved, only described as a “male,” could not be found despite help from a Wake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team and an aviation unit from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The police officer involved was not injured, Weiss said. No other information was released.
