Another hot day is on the way on Friday, with afternoon highs climbing back into the mid- to upper 90s across central North Carolina. High pressure will keep rain chances limited to only a stray afternoon shower or thunderstorm, while the combination of heat and humidity pushes heat index values into the low 100s.

If you’ll be spending an extended period outdoors, be sure to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Rain chances increase again on Saturday as a cold front approaches the region. This won’t be a washout, but it will provide a much better opportunity for scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. As is typical with summertime storms, a few could become strong.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed central North Carolina under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather on both Friday and Saturday. The strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts, small hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential rainfall, and localized flash flooding, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.
The cold front will bring a refreshing change to the forecast beginning Sunday. High temperatures will drop back into the 80s through Tuesday, and humidity levels will also be noticeably lower, making for a much more comfortable stretch of weather. Enjoy the break while it lasts, though, as the summer heat quickly builds back in during the second half of next week, with highs once again approaching the upper 90s.
