Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across central North Carolina again on Saturday as a cold front moves through the region.

While the day won’t be a washout, the front will provide enough lift for more numerous afternoon and evening storms than we’ve seen over the past several days. If you have outdoor plans, keep an eye on the radar and be prepared to head indoors if thunderstorms develop.
A few storms could become strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed central North Carolina under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather on both Saturday and Sunday. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, small hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential downpours, and localized flash flooding where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.
Behind the front, a refreshing change arrives for the second half of the weekend and the start of next week. Cooler, less humid air will settle in from Sunday through Tuesday, with afternoon highs returning to the 80s and overnight lows dropping into the mid- to upper 60s. After several days of triple-digit heat index values, it will be a welcome break and some of the most comfortable weather we’ve experienced in weeks.
Don’t get too used to it, though. The summer heat builds back into the region during the second half of next week, with highs climbing back into the mid- to upper 90s by Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the cooler air while it lasts!
