Man arrested, Rocky Mount shooting victim dies following Thursday gunfire on Cokey Road: Police

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Rocky Mount said Saturday that a man is facing charges after a Thursday shooting that has since killed a person.

The incident was reported around 9:15 a.m. Thursday as a “shooting with injury” in the 700 block of Cokey Road, near Long Avenue, according to a Rocky Mount Police Department news release.

Upon arrival, officers found a “male victim” suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.

The victim, Courtney Crocker, 54, was critically wounded in the shooting but later died, police said Saturday afternoon.

Before Crocker died, police said investigators tracked down the shooting suspect and made an arrest.

When the victim was still alive, Herman Dickens, 61, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, according to a news release.

“Following the victim’s death, additional charges are anticipated pending consultation with the District Attorney’s Office,” officers said in the release.

Dickens was denied bond and remains in custody at the Edgecombe County Detention Center.

The shooting on Thursday is the third in less than three years in the same block of Cokey Road, where there is a mix of homes and retail businesses.

A shooting in late May of 2025 involved a man named Herman Dickens in the 700 block of Cokey Road, according to Rocky Mount police. The incident involved a man and woman fighting, with Dickens receiving a gunshot wound and two officers being struck in a scuffle, police said.

In early October of 2023, a man was found shot in the 700 block of Cokey Road, with a suspect found in town elsewhere hiding in an attic, police said.
