HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — A High Point man is awaiting extradition back to Orlando, Florida, in connection with a decades-old murder case.

Willie Carpenter was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service North Carolina Regional Task Force on Friday.

He lives in High Point, and his arrest comes 38 years after the murder of Orlando woman Diane Matthews, according to court records.

She was found dead in September 1988 at her job.


Officers collected DNA at the time, but the technology was not routinely used in criminal cases at that time.
Investigators got a new lead and entered Carpenter’s DNA, which had been collected during an unrelated case, into a criminal database that linked him to the scene.

He was charged with first-degree murder.
