A significant heat wave of the season arrives Sunday, bringing a summer-like feel to central North Carolina. After starting the morning in the lower 60s, abundant sunshine and a gusty southwest wind will send temperatures soaring into the lower 90s by afternoon. The combination of heat, dry air, and strong May sunshine will make it feel more like July than late spring.

In Raleigh, the forecast high of 92° is the same as the daily record of 92°, set back in 1947. Several locations across the Triangle could flirt with record warmth during the hottest part of the day. The heat doesn’t back down quickly either. Lower 90s are expected to persist through Wednesday before a slow-moving cold front finally brings changes late Thursday into Friday.

That front will introduce the best chance for widespread rain the region has seen in quite some time. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop as the boundary moves through, helping temperatures fall from the 90s on Wednesday into the mid-80s on Thursday and eventually the mid-70s by Friday.
Rainfall totals of around a half inch or more appear possible across much of the area, with localized totals over an inch likely closer to the North Carolina coast, where moisture will be deeper.

Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, conditions appear much more seasonable. Moisture sticks around with a stationary front. Most likely, this will not be a washout type of weather but rather some pop-up style showers or even a storm. The forecast will be fine-tuned as we move closer to the holiday, so check back for updates.
