Lindsey Graham’s sister to complete late senator’s term. What comes next?

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WJZY) — Lindsey Graham’s sister will serve out the remainder of the late South Carolina Senator’s term. Governor Henry McMaster announced the appointment of Darline Graham Nordone during a ceremony Monday afternoon.

Graham Nordone said she views the role as a way to honor her brother.

“Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words, but I’m going to do this. I got it. Thank you,” she said.

Lindsey passed away suddenly on Saturday evening from an aortic tear. Darline was raised by Lindsey after both of their parents died within 15 months when she was just 13.

Graham Nordone has not held political office but supported Lindsey’s campaigns and previously worked with the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.

“I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States,” she added.

As for a permanent replacement, several names have been floated, including members of Congress like Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman, and Russell Fry.

Lt Governor Pamela Evette was asked about her interest in the seat during an interview with LiveNow from FOX. Evette finished second in the GOP primary for South Carolina Governor last month.

“It will be a tight primary. You know, filing will open, I think, a week from tomorrow, and it lasts for a week. You’ll start to see the landscape. But I think today is a day we should leave, once again, for remembering the senator and the amazing work that he’s done,” said Evette.

Graham Nordone has agreed to serve through the end of Lindsey’s term, which expires in January. As for the special election, filing begins July 21, and the primary is set for August 11. A runoff is scheduled for August 25, if necessary. The winter will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
