Search for missing boater enters fourth day as rescue crews search Roanoke Rapids Lake

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WNCN) — The search for a dad who went kayaking before the vessel capsized in Roanoke Rapids Lake has entered yet another day between Halifax and Northampton County.

Rescue crews from Halifax, Nash, Northampton and Wake counties have been combing through the waters just north of Roanoke Rapids for four days. Two men were in a tandem kayak on Thursday when it capsized around 9 p.m. in the lake, according to officials.

CBS 17 previously spoke with the family and officials searching for the missing man, Angel Rafael Aparicio Martinez. They said Martinez gave the only lifejacket in the kayak to his friend, who officials said they found drifting towards a dam in the the massive body of water.

According to Gaston Fire & Rescue, Martinez was not found Saturday after search operations included new efforts from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol with a helicopter to assist. In a social media post Saturday night, they said search and rescue crews used drone, land search, towable sonars — including hull-mounted side-scan sonar, underwater remote-controlled vehicle, cadaver K-9s and divers.

Roanoke Rapids Lake is a 4,600-acre reservoir connected to Lake Gaston, which is about 20,000 acres and spans into Virginia.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation into the missing man, Angel Rafael Aparicio Martinez.
