Mensah’s departure from Duke leaves Devils with hole at quarterback

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WNCN) — Miami quarterback Darian Mensah signs autographs at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte. Six months ago, Mensah sent shockwaves throughout college football when he abruptly decided to depart Duke for Miami. His timing couldn’t have been worse for the Blue Devils.

“Yeah, it was a tough sequence of events,” said Mensah. “My teammates and I were discussing the NFL and we really didn’t pivot off that until later in the transfer portal cycle, so it was just kind of a timing thing that was kind of messed up.”

Was it ever. Mensah left Duke in a bind when he hit the transfer portal at the very last minute. What made matters worse is just a month earlier he posted on Instagram that he would return to Durham. Duke sued for breech of contract, but the two sides eventually settled. Still, the messy departure hangs like a cloud over the talented quarterback.

“I’ve got a lot more on my plate than to look at the opinions of others, so I’m not really focused on any of that,” said Mensah.

Mensah says his focus is on winning, and he certainly has a great chance to do that at Miami, a school that played for a national championship last season. Through the years, the Hurricanes have been known for their offensive production. Mensah is the perfect quarterback to continue that tradition.

“Obviously seeing what the last two quarterbacks did at Miami was a huge factor, and seeing the type of roster Miami has, obviously I want to compete for a national championship, and I have a lot of personal goals for myself and I think Miami was the spot to do that,” said Mensah.

The road to get there, though, left plenty of collateral damage.

“I feel like I’m at home here at Miami and couldn’t ask for more,” said Mensah.
