Officials believe Mr. Pickles suffered years of neglect inside the home. He was treated for a severe ear infection by veterinarians at Longleaf Animal Rescue in Hillsborough and a large ear tumor was removed, requiring 10 stiches.

Deputies said Mr. Pickles was then taken to VEG ER for Pets in Chapel Hill, where 12 pounds of severely matted fur had to be removed from his body, a process that required sedation and took five hours.

“For many on the VEG ER for Pets team, Mr. Pickles’ case was one they will never forget,” the ER said in a statement. “His matted condition required extensive care and the emergency team worked tirelessly to give him every chance at recovery.”

The veterinarians who saved Mr. Pickles included Dr. Anna Taylor, who said she was deeply moved by his resilience and the opportunity to help him begin his healing journey.

According to the sheriff’s office, Mr. Pickles was initially afraid of human contact, but is now wagging his tail and showing signs of being comfortable around people again.

Officials said they were unable to locate family members of Mr. Pickles’ deceased owner who could take him into custody. They are hopeful he will someday be ready for adoption.
