Monday brings a break from the extreme heat, with highs topping out around 90° under a mix of sun and clouds. While temperatures will be a little more manageable, the atmosphere will remain unstable. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening, and a few could become strong to severe. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary threat, along with torrential downpours and frequent lightning.

Tuesday will feature a similar setup. Highs will reach the lower 90s with another round of scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms as a cold front approaches from the north. Once again, a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts.
The cold front moves through on Wednesday, bringing the best chance of widespread showers and thunderstorms during the middle of the week. Some storms could become severe, with damaging straight-line winds remaining the primary concern. Locally heavy rainfall is also possible before the front pushes east.
The payoff arrives late Wednesday into Thursday as noticeably drier air filters into central North Carolina. The cooler weather won’t last forever. Temperatures gradually rebound into the upper 80s next weekend and return to the lower 90s by early next week. Even so, the overall pattern looks drier, with only isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms expected.

OVERNIGHT will be mostly cloudy with lingering showers and storms. The low will be 72. Winds will be calm.
TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated gusty showers and storms. The high will be 92. Winds will be out of the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour.
