WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — Local authors will gather in Wilson this weekend for the inaugural Black Author Expo, an event designed to celebrate Black writers, encourage literacy and connect readers with authors from their own community.

The expo will be held Saturday at Dee’s House, 810 Reid St. E. in Wilson. Doors open at 2 p.m., followed by author introductions and a showcase from 2:45 to 6 p.m. Dee’s House has provided educational programming for children since 2009.
Organizers say the event will feature Black authors from across the region representing a range of genres, including motivational writing, business, personal development, memoir, faith and fiction.

“Reading, you can go anywhere; you can do anything; you can learn anything,” said Yolanda Davis, founder of Dee’s House. “I really want the kids to look at the young authors and see that they can indeed do the same thing.”

Event organizer A.J. Hilliard said Wilson is home to many talented writers whose work deserves greater recognition.
“There are so many talented people in Wilson that have a lot of great information when it comes to writing and literature,” Hilliard said.
The event is intended to highlight local authors while encouraging young people to explore reading, writing and storytelling.
