Stanley Pups: Museum in Durham announces 5 red wolves’ names as a nod to the Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — After hundreds of submissions were made, the names of five young red wolf pups born at the Museum of Life in Science in Durham have been officially announced.

Cane, Champ, Puck, Stormy and Whaler are the latest pack of red wolves that were born at the museum in early May.

As the three males and two females are nearing three months old, CBS 17 spoke with Sherry Samuels, the museum’s director of animal services, about their progress and the name selections.

“They’re doing great!” Samuels said of the litter of three males and two females. She added that the big, historic year for the Carolina Hurricanes led naturally to a lot of team-themed suggestions.

Cane, Champ, Puck, Stormy and Whaler make up the eighth litter to be born at the museum since it joined a nationwide effort program to rebuild the species in the early 90s.

“It’s pretty exciting for North Carolina and all the guests that come to the museum to get a chance to see the most endangered wolf in the world right here in North Carolina,” Samuels said. “We couldn’t be more thrilled.”

As they’ve grown, Samuels said the five pups are spending much more time out and about in their habitat, especially with the swimming pool now filled for them to enjoy.
