Cary woman last seen swimming in water before disappearing in Grenada: Island police

CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — The Royal Grenada Police Force held a press conference Tuesday morning to provide an update on a Cary woman who went missing last week.

Elizabeth Waddell, 44, was vacationing on the Caribbean island for about two weeks with a friend when she disappeared last Wednesday, July 22, on Grand Anse Beach near the capital city of St. George’s.

During Monday’s press conference, Royal Grenada Police Force Commissioner Randy Connaught said a timeline had been established in Waddell’s disappearance.

According to Connaught, Waddell arrived in Grenada with her friend on July 11 on a flight from Miami and stayed at a resort on the western side of the island during their first 10 days. She and her friend relocated to Grand Anse Beach on July 21, the day before she went missing.

Surveillance footage taken on July 22, the day of Waddell’s disappearance, shows her walking towards a jetty around 11:36 a.m. and was on the jetty about 10 minutes later, according to Connaught.

The police commissioner said Waddell was seen entering the water at 11:51 a.m. and was swimming beneath the jetty around 12:04 p.m.

Waddell’s friend was seen on surveillance video walking towards the jetty about 40 minutes later, around 12:46 p.m., but returned alone. The surveillance footage never showed Waddell return from the water, according to Connaught.

According to the police commissioner, there were also several eyewitness accounts of her swimming in the water.

Connaught said Waddell was reported missing to St. George police by her friend that day at 5:15 p.m., prompting an immediate search for her. The Royal Grenada Police Force put out a release about her disappearance the following day.

According to Connaught, multiple agencies are working to recreate Waddell’s movements as they continue to conduct land, water, and air searches for her.

Grenada’s police force has also contacted a principal officer of the United States Embassy on the island and the FBI, according to Connaught.

As of Tuesday morning, Connaught said Grenada police have not reached or announced a conclusion regarding Waddell’s disappearance. The case continues to be treated as a missing persons investigation.

Anyone with information about Waddell’s disappearance is asked to contact Grenada police.

Waddell is a physical therapist who runs her business, Art of Movement, out of her home. Her husband, Cailen, an operations manager for the Town of Cary’s Department of Parks, recreation, and Cultural Resources, joined the search for her on July 24.
