Near-record heat for central NC ahead of late-week rain

It’s feeling more like the middle of July instead of the middle of May as highs continue to climb into the low 90s. These high temperatures will also continue to flirt with records Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a cold front, which will bring subtle change to central North Carolina.

In addition to the hot weather, the humidity is increasing as well, making it feel a little hotter each afternoon. When humidity is high, sweat cannot evaporate as efficiently, making it harder for the body to cool itself. Anyone spending extended time outdoors should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

By Thursday, a slow-moving cold front pushes through central North Carolina, bringing slight temperature relief, but also a chance for rain. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon and evening, bringing the best chance for widespread rain in quite some time.

Because the cold front is moving slowly, it will keep rain chances around through Friday. However, the front could revert back north by the weekend. This will allow more moisture to settle in, keeping the chance for off-and-on showers to continue through Memorial Day weekend. We are not expecting a washout holiday weekend, but be aware of the chance for scattered rain into next week.
