How much would it cost UNC Chapel Hill to fire Bill Belichick?

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WGHP) — The Bill Belichick era at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently hit another stumbling block as general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid leave on Monday.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Lombardi is being placed on leave due to a human resources complaint that was filed by a former UNC front office employee.

Following a disappointing 4-8 season in 2025, Belichick’s first at UNC, expectations remain low for the Tar Heels in 2026.

FanDuel Sportsbook has the Tar Heels’ wins over/under set at 4.5. BetMGM has UNC with the third-lowest odds to win the ACC at +12500.

For context, a $1 bet on UNC to win the ACC would net you $125 in winnings. Those odds functionally mean that oddsmakers view the Tar Heels as the third-worst team in the conference.

UNC Athletics had already denied rumors of a potential Belichick exit early into the 2025 season after Ollie Connolly of The Guardian reported that the two sides were discussing buyout options.

Controversies in the Belichick era

While the disappointing on-field results have been a large source of fan dissatisfaction during the Bill Belichick era, Belichick’s hiring has also come with controversies unrelated to the team’s performance on the field.

A lawsuit was filed in 2025 that accused the UNC Board of Trustees of systematically hiding matters of grave public concern, which includes approving thehiring of Belichick in an illegal closed session.

John Preyer, the Chair Emeritus of the UNC Board, resigned before his tenure was scheduled to end in 2027.

Another source of controversy since Belichick’s hiring has been his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

The age gap between the 25-year-old Hudson and the 74-year-old Belichick has drawn heavy media attention.

UNC had to deny a report from sports journalist Pablo Torre that Hudson has been banned from the team’s facility.

The Athletic also reported that Hudson “played an instrumental role in stopping the production” of the Tar Heels being featured on the 2025 season of HBO’s “Hard Knocks”

A member of UNC’s coaching staff, cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins, was suspended during the 2025 season after he allegedly provided extra benefits to family members of a player, according to The Athletic.

Lombardi stirred controversy early in his tenure as GM when The Athletic reported that he took an “an exploratory fundraising trip” to Saudi Arabia just before UNC opened its season.

UNC told The News & Observer that Lombardi went to Saudi Arabia “at the request of a Saudi national who is a college football fan, interested in supporting Coach Belichick,” and that Lombardi was invited by the hosts, who also funded the trip.

The Athletic also reports that UNC has been approached by the College Sports Commission regarding a potential investigation. Sources told The Athletic that alleged actions by Lombardi are believed to be of interest.

How much would it cost UNC to fire Belichick?

While UNC has not indicated any intention to fire Belichick, what exactly would the Tar Heels owe Belichick if they did decide to fire him?

We read through Belichick’s contract to find the answer, and you can read the contract for yourself below.

What does the contract say?

Fired for cause

If Belichick were to be fired for cause, UNC would only owe him the money he had earned through the date of his termination.

An employee can be fired for cause if they, or someone under their supervision, violated a duty included in their contract or if they are convicted of a “felony or criminal act that involves fraud or moral turpitude.”

In that scenario, UNC would essentially be off the hook for any amount of money remaining on Belichick’s contract.

Examples of violating contractual duties would include violations of the NCAA or ACC bylaws. UNC simply performing suboptimally on the field would not qualify as a cause to fire Belichick, as the contract states, “that the Program’s win-loss record, recruiting rankings, and other similar metrics shall not support termination for Cause pursuant to Section 13 of this Agreement.”

Fired without cause

If Belichick were to be terminated without cause, UNC would then owe him the remainder of his salary through Dec. 31, 2027.

The terms of Belichick’s five-year deal, worth $10 million each year, only guarantee the money through the first three years of the contract, meaning that Carolina would most likely be on the hook for the remainder of Belichick’s guaranteed $30 million if they were to fire Belichick before 2028.

Belichick would also be owed any performance bonus money that he had earned until the point of his firing. However, those bonuses are based on how high UNC finishes in the Top 25 of the College Football Playoff poll, an achievement that is unlikely to have happened in the event that he is fired without cause.

Belichick resigns of his own volition

Per the terms of the contract, Belichick is allowed to end his contract with UNC “for any reason upon written notice to the University and payment of liquidated damages.” Initially, the “liquidated damages” owed by Belichick would have been $10 million; however, that number decreased to $1 million on June 1, 2025.

If Belichick were to either resign or retire from UNC, the school would only owe him the salary he had earned up until the date he submitted written notice of his resignation.

UNC and Belichick agree to terminate

Per the terms of the contract, UNC and Belichick are allowed to reach a written mutual agreement to terminate the contract at any time.

Other costs to consider

Firing Belichick would also mean parting with many members of his staff whom Belichick was responsible for hiring.

For example, Lombardi, a close personal friend of Belichick, is being paid $1.5 million per year through Jan. 15, 2028, by UNC. Lombardi would more than likely also be parting ways with UNC in the event Belichick is fired.

Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, is also currently UNC’s defensive coordinator. He is contracted to make $2.7 million through Jan. 15, 2027, according to the Tar Heel Tribune. Belichick’s son would also presumably be likely to part ways with UNC in the event his father is fired.

How are the fans feeling?

WNCN’s Harrison Grubb went to Chapel Hill to see how Tar Heels fans are feeling about the latest controversy.

“I’d be pretty sad,” said one fan. “It’s going to be bad.

“It’s a little worrisome,” said another fan.

The media also shared in the pessimistic outlook for the Tar Heels.

In the 2026 ACC football predictions, UNC was projected to finish 15th in the ACC, matching the third-to-last projection from oddsmakers.
